JG Sohotel Overview
I’ll be honest – when I first walked into JG Sohotel on Lafayette Street, I wasn’t expecting much from what looked like a pretty standard three-star setup. But you know what? Sometimes the unassuming places end up surprising you the most. The lobby has this clean, minimalist vibe that actually works really well with the whole SoHo aesthetic, and the staff behind the front desk seemed genuinely happy to see guests rather than just going through the motions.
What really sold me on this place was the location – I mean, you’re literally in the heart of everything that makes New York’s SoHo neighborhood worth visiting. Step outside and you’re maybe two minutes from some seriously good coffee shops, and Prince Street with all its cast-iron architecture is right there for those Instagram shots everyone’s trying to get. The rooms themselves are on the smaller side (this is Manhattan, after all), but they’re thoughtfully laid out and surprisingly quiet considering you’re on a pretty busy street. I actually slept better here than at some fancier places I’ve stayed uptown – the windows do a decent job blocking out the city noise, though you’ll still get the occasional siren around 2 AM.
Here’s the thing about staying here – you’re not getting luxury spa treatments or a rooftop infinity pool, but you are getting a solid base camp for exploring one of the coolest neighborhoods in the city. The elevators are a bit slow (fair warning if you’re on the upper floors), and the breakfast situation is pretty basic, but honestly? With places like Balthazar and Jack’s Wife Freda within walking distance, you’d be crazy to eat hotel food anyway. What I really appreciated was how the front desk staff knew their neighborhood – they pointed me toward this little gallery opening on Spring Street that I never would have found otherwise, and they were spot-on about which subway entrance to use to avoid the construction chaos. It’s that kind of local knowledge that makes a decent hotel feel like a smart choice rather than just a place to crash.

Pretty close by, but canal st is a bit sketchy
Staff were nice, overall goodGood, clean, good price, in active and exciting Chinatown, near the MTA, a bit small. Good. – Klaske from United States – February 3, 2025 (9/10)
nice bathroom. clean rooms.
What could be improved: The bathroom near the lobby was under construction and had no lock. I’m sure once it’s done it’ll be very nice.Comfortable and clean – Chun from Sweden – September 30, 2024 (9/10)
The location is great, right next to the station!
What could be improved: Not much.Good place to stay and well located, close to big bus tour bus and close to some attractions – Josue from United States – September 3, 2024 (9/10)
Well located, clean
What could be improved: No cleaning service, more like Airbnb, no vending machines.Good location, but very standard – Jesus from Spain – August 30, 2024 (6/10)
Good location.
What could be improved: Hotel quite standard and pricy for the facility. The room was small and not big enough to host four people. Bed mattresses were too soft and we sunk on them. The bathroom was really tiny. Very noisy, windows not properly sealed for a hotel located in China Town. Overall, not giving value for the money. They charged us 20 dollars to keep our luggage for four hours after checking out.Would definitely stay again – Eve from Australia – August 25, 2024 (9/10)
Close to subway, very friendly staff, comfortable bed, free cooler and coffee downstairs
What could be improved: Rooms are very small, but very standard for New York and there’s a fair bit of noise from outside but again it’s New YorkGreat little hotel – Kevin from United Kingdom – June 26, 2024 (8/10)
