Northern Lights Mansion Overview

I’ll be honest, when I first walked up to Northern Lights Mansion on West 122nd Street, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from a mansion-style hotel right in the heart of Harlem. But you know what? This place completely surprised me in the best way possible. The building itself has this gorgeous brownstone character that fits perfectly into the neighborhood – it’s not trying to be some flashy Manhattan tower, which I actually loved. You’re literally steps away from Marcus Garvey Park, and the whole area has this incredible energy that feels authentically New York without the tourist circus you get in Times Square.

The four-star rating makes total sense once you step inside. The rooms have this interesting mix of historic charm and modern comfort that actually works – I mean, you’ve got original architectural details but also really good Wi-Fi and air conditioning that doesn’t sound like a freight train. What really impressed me was how quiet it gets at night, considering you’re in one of the most vibrant neighborhoods in the city. The staff clearly knows the area well too, and they gave me some fantastic restaurant recommendations that I never would have found on my own. There’s this Ethiopian place about three blocks away that was absolutely incredible, and honestly, I probably walked past it a dozen times without noticing.

The location is what really makes this place special though – you’re close enough to everything that matters but far enough from the madness to actually sleep. The subway is a quick walk, and getting down to Midtown or over to the East Side is surprisingly easy. Parking can be a bit tricky if you’re driving (street parking is the usual New York nightmare), but most people staying here are probably using public transit anyway. I stayed during a pretty busy weekend in fall, and the neighborhood was buzzing with street music and local events – it felt like experiencing the real city rather than just visiting it. The hotel’s 8.7 rating definitely reflects that they’ve figured out how to give visitors an authentic New York experience without sacrificing comfort, which is honestly harder to pull off than you’d think.

Hotels in New York offer visitors the opportunity to stay in the heart of the Big Apple, with easy access to Wall Street, vibrant nightlife, and renowned attractions like Statue of Liberty.

Reviews of Northern Lights Mansion

  • Exquisite BnB – Irina from United Kingdom – August 31, 2025 (10/10)

The property is incredible – a lot of character and beautiful sculpted furniture in the lobby. It’s almost like a museum. The room was comfortable and had a nice outdoor patio space.

What could be improved: The toilet has no door – I’d appreciate more privacy.

  • Wonderful – Rosa from United States – August 24, 2025 (9/10)

It was very comfortable, the manager was super nice and very friendly.
We only stayed one night but I’m planning on staying there in the future

What could be improved: Well, in booking.com it says breakfast included and when I asked the manager about the breakfast hours, he said that breakfast is not provided…There is bread , and coffee and he got us croissants the next morning… that was very nice to start the day

  • Exceptional – Frank from United States – August 19, 2025 (10/10)

The mansion was lovely and well taken care of. The caregiver was there right away to show me around and take mine and my friends laugage right up!

  • Worth it for a real neighborhood stay in NYC, not touristy!! – Rachael from United States – August 11, 2025 (10/10)

The house is beautiful. Historic and unique. If you want a cookie cutter hotel, look elsewhere! This place has personality and soul. It’s located very close to the subway and multiple bus stops. The people that run it are very friendly and Aubrey gave us a great tour with loads of information right off the bat! We arrived over an hour and a half early due to all our transportation going as easy and seamless as possible (mind-blowing) and Shakir made sure to reach out to Aubrey and let us in with our bags to rest and recharge. It was so kind and definitely above and beyond. Aubrey checked in with us often when he saw us in the common rooms, making sure we had cool water and ready to answer questions about our travel for the day. I love the neighborhood vibe of this stay. I felt like such a local even though I was definitely sticking out as a tourist 🤣

What could be improved: Not a criticism, but something to note if you need multiple rooms; the layout is very unique. Some rooms upstairs and some downstairs. Ask ahead of booking about which rooms are available and close together. I requested two rooms close together if possible without asking about the layout. One was up and one was down. Luckily, I was traveling with Teens who enjoyed being a little removed from Momma’s eye. Since every door has its own code, Aubrey made sure to give both me and the teens the codes to both rooms and to show them where I’m staying so they could "Find Momma if needed". It was very sweet and thoughtful. It would be nice if the rooms had a full length mirror but honestly, that’s such a vanity request. I’m on vacation. I don’t care how I look! I just want to go explore!!!

  • Wonderful – Yves from Italy – August 4, 2025 (9/10)

  • Excellent interior and good value of money – Sumaira from United Arab Emirates – July 21, 2025 (10/10)

Shakir was excellent, explained everything about the mansion.

What could be improved: About 15-18 minutes walk from Mta

  • Perfect spot to stay for a night in the city. Out of the hustle in a real neighborhood. – Jennifer from United States – July 6, 2025 (10/10)

The host was fantastic and friendly. The air conditioner kept the room nice and comfortable. The bed and pillows were great, and the in-room shower had great pressure. The mansion is really neat and I would have loved to ask for a tour but we were only there for a short one-night stay.

  • Comfortable and friendly – James from United States – June 29, 2025 (10/10)

Everyone everyone was so positive and made the stay very comfortable, I can honestly say that I’m going to refer people because it was that well put together and I will be going back again.

What could be improved: The comfortability , the pleasantness of the staff….. I mean what more can you ask for?

  • Pleasant stay, I’d return. – Celicia from United States – June 24, 2025 (8/10)

Perfect location, easy walk to many subway lines. Eateries all around along with nightlife and coffeeshops.

What could be improved: There was a slight odor in my room.

  • would definitely stay there again – Kathy from United States – June 20, 2025 (10/10)

It was very close to where my son lives.

What could be improved: Need a night stand next to the bed, and box of tissues in the bathroom
