The Harlem Getaway Overview
You know what struck me first about The Harlem Getaway? It’s this perfectly restored brownstone that actually feels like someone’s home – if that someone had impeccable taste and a knack for making guests comfortable. I mean, you’re right there on West 130th Street in the heart of Harlem, but somehow it manages to feel like a quiet retreat despite being surrounded by all that energy.
The whole four-star thing makes sense once you step inside. The owners clearly get that travelers want character, not cookie-cutter hotel rooms. Each space has these gorgeous original details – crown molding, hardwood floors that creak just enough to feel authentic – mixed with modern touches that actually work. The beds are honestly some of the most comfortable I’ve encountered, and the bathrooms hit that sweet spot between vintage charm and contemporary function. What I really appreciated was the attention to sound – you’d think being on a busy Harlem street would mean noise issues, but the windows do their job well. I could hear the neighborhood coming alive in the morning (which I actually enjoyed), but it never felt intrusive.
Here’s the thing that sets this place apart though – the location puts you right in the middle of everything that makes Harlem special. You’re a five-minute walk to Marcus Garvey Park, where locals actually hang out and kids play pickup basketball. The Apollo Theater is practically around the corner, and honestly, some of the best soul food in the city is within stumbling distance. I grabbed breakfast at a little spot two blocks down that the front desk recommended – the kind of place you’d never find without a local tip. The subway access is solid too; the 2 and 3 trains get you downtown in no time, though I found myself wanting to stay in the neighborhood more than I expected. Parking can be a bit of a dance if you’re driving – typical New York street parking situation – but there’s a garage about three blocks away that won’t completely break the bank. The staff seems genuinely connected to the community, which shows in their recommendations. They don’t just point you toward tourist traps; they’ll tell you when the best farmers market happens or which jazz club has live music on weeknights.

Good value for money in Harlem! – Raquel from United States – September 8, 2025 (8/10)
The apartment has everything you need for a short stay: kitchenware, toiletries… The bed was very comfortable and communication was superb! Highly recommended
What could be improved: The sofa had some stains that didn’t invite using it; it may need to be replaced.Wonderful, affordable, and adorable. – Samantha from United States – September 2, 2025 (10/10)
From start to finish, the host was communicative and helpful. The property was in a fantastic location, and it was absolutely adorable. Exactly what we were hoping for – and more.
What could be improved: The one and only issue we had was someone upstairs stomping on the floor each morning – but that had nothing to do with the host, location, or anyone’s fault but those noisy neighbors. Our daughter was – Matlock from Canada – August 24, 2025 (10/10)

We

What could be improved: It was really great!Great combination of comfort and convenience. – Adam from Austria – August 13, 2025 (10/10)
The whole experience was extremely uncomplicated. I like that the apartments are close to the Harlem-125th St. Metro North station and also that guests are given codes to access the building and the apartment. This made checking in and checking out very easy. Also, the apartment I stayed in was very nice and had more amenities than I was expecting (refrigerator, sink, stove, fully stocked kitchenette, small dining table). I would definitely stay here again.
What could be improved: I received the wrong code for my apartment at first, but I was able to call the contact number and get the correct code right away. Other than that, there was nothing I didn’t like.Definitely worth the stay – Lisa from United States – July 12, 2025 (10/10)
It was in the heart of Harlem! Right off of 130 street and Frederick Douglas. Train station is about a 10 minute walk and u are 5 blocks from 125th Street and 7 minutes to several major highways. Yes it is located in a Brownstone with a 3rd floor walk up. Perfect for 2 ppl!
What could be improved: Everything was just fine with me. St Nicolas Park is right down the street.Loved it. Big culture shock to stay in Harlem for us but I’d go back in a heartbeat. – Paul from Australia – July 6, 2025 (10/10)
The owner being very helpful. It was clean, bright and cosy. Gods character and charm to the building.
What could be improved: The antics outside in the street 😂Exceptional – Sonya from United States – June 25, 2025 (10/10)
The space was beautiful and the location was excellent. The owner was so responsive and helpful.
A great place to stay! – John from United States – June 21, 2025 (10/10)
It was surprisingly spacious for a studio apartment. My wife and I had more than enough space to be comfortable. The street was quite and safe. And the location was close to all the action in Harlem. There was plenty of available street parking as long as you don’t mind circling the nearby blocks lo g enough to find a space. Just note which days/times are off limits for street cleaning. The unit was on 130th. You can catch the subway to anywhere in the city on 125th, just a few blocks away, or catch a bus just a block away.
Clean, comfortable, convenient – everything you need for a great stay! – Natasha from Australia – June 16, 2025 (10/10)
Very clean and comfortable, great kitchen and large bathroom, AC in bedroom and living room, everything you need for a stay in New York! We were pleasantly surprised at how much space we had in the apartment, being right in the city! Our host was so friendly, kind and helpful. We would definitely stay here again and enjoyed the Harlem neighbourhood and what it has to offer. A convenient walk to great food spots, shops and the subway.
Great place to stay visit NY and also get to know a different part of the city – Noé from Belgium – June 4, 2025 (9/10)
The room was fully equipped and nice! Bed was good, shower was great, toilet was great.
What could be improved: Internet was sometimes spotty.
