Overview

You know what, I’ll be straight with you about New York Suite Upper East Side Manhattan – the name is doing some serious geographical gymnastics here. This two-star place is actually tucked away on East 105th Street in East Harlem, which is definitely not the Upper East Side (that ends around 96th Street, if we’re being technical). But honestly? Don’t let the confusing name throw you off, because the location is actually pretty solid for exploring upper Manhattan.

I stayed here last spring and was surprised by how quiet the block is, considering you’re still very much in the thick of things. East 105th is one of those residential streets where you’ll hear kids playing in the courtyard across the way rather than constant traffic noise – though the subway rumble from the 6 train is definitely present if you’re a light sleeper. The building itself has that classic pre-war brick facade that makes you feel like you’re getting an authentic New York experience without paying Midtown prices. Walking to the 103rd Street station takes about three minutes, and from there you’re looking at maybe 15 minutes to get down to Times Square or 20 to the Financial District.

What I really appreciated was how the neighborhood gives you a genuine slice of local life. There’s this fantastic Dominican bakery two blocks down where the café con leche is ridiculously good, and honestly, the bodega right around the corner has better sandwich prices than anything you’ll find in tourist areas. The Mount Sinai Hospital complex is pretty close by, which means the area stays busy with foot traffic during the day but quiets down nicely in the evenings. Central Park’s northern edge is walkable – maybe a 10-minute stroll – and that section around the Harlem Meer is gorgeous and way less crowded than the southern parts everyone flocks to. I mean, you’re also within reasonable distance of Marcus Garvey Park, which has this cool amphitheater where they do summer performances. The room itself was clean and functional, nothing fancy but the bed was comfortable enough and the bathroom had decent water pressure (always a gamble in older New York buildings). Check-in was smooth, though parking is street-only, so factor that in if you’re driving. For the price point and the genuine neighborhood vibe, it’s actually a pretty decent base camp for exploring the city – just don’t expect luxury amenities at this level.

The ceiling leaked

What could be improved: The actual location of the apartment proved to be few streets uptown than the offer showed (further from the subway station). The information about the lock box that I received before check-in were completely wrong - the lock box was located in a different place than the instruction showed. I had to search for the lock box on the street at 1 am in the morning (our plane was late and it was when we arrived). The instruction concerning the keys were opaque - whenever the instruction said counterclockwise the key turned clockwise etc. The wi-fi password did not work. The ceiling started leaking halfway through the stay and when I contacted the host, instead of a reaction, they asked for a picture! The general cleanliness of the apartment was really poor.

Underwhelming.

This apartment has some serious drawbacks to be aware of.

It clearly hadn’t been cleaned properly before our arrival – the bathroom floor had visible hair, including pubic hair, which was unacceptable. The towel rail in the bathroom was broken, the soap dispensers were empty, and there were no hand towels or a bath mat provided. The shower also didn’t drain properly, leaving us standing in ankle-deep water.

The kitchen was poorly equipped: no toaster, no pot large enough to boil pasta, and the only dish cloth/scourer looked like it had been used on the floor and left behind. The dishwasher was useful, but there was no dishwashing powder provided.

We also had repeated issues with the keys – both to the main entrance and the apartment itself – which were difficult to unlock and remove. The WiFi was essentially unusable, slow and unreliable even for basic browsing.

The apartment was noisy at night, so light sleepers should bring earplugs. While we never felt completely unsafe, be aware this is Harlem, not the Upper East Side — it has a different feel, so adjust expectations accordingly.

On the positive side, the washer and dryer worked well, and the location was relatively convenient. The 110th St subway station is within walking distance, and there’s a grocery store nearby. If you plan to cook, just be sure to check the kitchen setup before buying ingredients.

Overall, this stay didn’t meet our expectations, but it didn’t ruin our trip. We loved our time in New York — we just wouldn’t stay at this apartment again.

Fair

This place had everything we needed—a well-stocked kitchen, fresh linens, a washer/dryer, dishwasher, and more. The hosts were friendly and responded quickly to every question.

What could be improved: The property had several issues: there were leaks in the ceiling, the actual location did not match the one advertised on Booking (which felt dishonest), and the neighborhood was extremely noisy. This significantly impacted our stay.
