Overview

I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to Leon Hotel LES on Canal Street, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The building sits right there where Chinatown starts getting interesting, and from the outside it looks like it could go either way, you know? But step inside and there’s this surprisingly sleek lobby that immediately tells you someone actually thought about the design here.

What really struck me about this three-star place is how it manages to feel both polished and unpretentious at the same time. The rooms are compact – I mean, we’re talking about New York here, so no surprises there – but they’re laid out smart, with these floor-to-ceiling windows that actually open (which is rarer than you’d think downtown). Mine faced Canal Street, so yeah, there’s some traffic noise, but honestly it’s part of the whole Lower East Side experience. If you’re looking for dead silence, maybe request a back-facing room, though you’ll miss out on the energy of watching the neighborhood wake up.

The location is actually brilliant once you get your bearings. You’re literally a two-minute walk from some of the best dim sum spots in the city – Joe’s Shanghai is practically next door, and there’s this little bakery on Mott Street where locals line up for fresh pork buns every morning around 7 AM. But here’s what I really appreciated: you can walk to SoHo in about ten minutes, hit the Brooklyn Bridge in fifteen, and there’s a subway entrance right there on Canal that connects you to basically everywhere. The front desk staff seemed to genuinely know the area too – when I asked about late-night eats, the guy didn’t just hand me a generic list but actually pointed me toward this noodle place that stays open until 2 AM and doesn’t look like much but serves incredible wontons.

The hotel itself feels refreshingly straightforward – no pretentious lobby art or over-the-top amenities, just clean lines, good lighting, and everything working like it should. The shower pressure was solid (always a gamble in older buildings down here), and I loved that they included a proper mini-fridge, not one of those overpriced minibar situations. Check-in was smooth even though I arrived during what seemed like a busy weekend, and they held my bags without any fuss when I wanted to explore before my room was ready. You know what really impressed me though? The elevators are fast. Sounds silly, but when you’re running late and staying on the eighth floor, these little things matter. It’s the kind of place that gets the basics right without trying to be something it’s not, which in this neighborhood – where authenticity actually means something – feels just about perfect.

Apartments in New York provide travelers with authentic local experiences, allowing them to explore traditional delis and experience daily life in historic neighborhoods like Greenwich Village and SoHo.

Excellent value, great location and attentive and welcoming staff.

Extremely clean, excellent location, superb staff.

What could be improved: To be honest - we couldn’t fault it. It completely lived up to our expectation based on what we’d reviewed ahead of booking. Will definitely be back!

Wonderful

The location was great, the room was clean and comfortable.

What could be improved: The bathroom fan needed some help, it sounded like it was struggling while showering.

Good value close to the city

Good value for how close to Manhattan and Brooklyn the hotel is. The room was clean, had AC, the staff was helpful, we could leave our luggage on the check out day free of charge.

What could be improved: The surrounding area might be a little off putting for those who are not used to Chinatown. We never felt unsafe though!
