Soul Food ‘Mont Morris’ Overview

You know what caught me off guard about Soul Food ‘Mont Morris’? I was expecting just another budget spot in New York, but this three-star place actually has some serious character. It sits right on West 120th Street between Lenox and 5th Avenue, and honestly, the location is pretty much perfect if you want to experience real Harlem without feeling like you’re stuck way uptown.

The building itself has this old-school brownstone vibe that feels authentically neighborhood – I mean, you’re literally surrounded by the kind of historic architecture that makes Harlem special. What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night, which is saying something for this part of the city. The rooms aren’t huge (this is New York, after all), but they’re thoughtfully designed with these warm, earthy tones that actually complement the soul food theme without being cheesy about it. The beds are surprisingly comfortable, and the bathrooms are modern enough that you won’t feel like you’re roughing it. I actually slept better here than I have at some fancier Midtown places where you hear sirens all night.

The neighborhood knowledge you get just by staying here is worth the price alone. You’re a five-minute walk from Marcus Garvey Park – which locals still call Mount Morris Park sometimes, hence the name – and the morning energy around there is infectious. Plus, you’re positioned perfectly between some of Harlem’s best dining spots on Lenox Avenue and the more residential charm closer to Fifth Avenue. The staff genuinely knows the area and will point you toward places that aren’t in every guidebook. I got a recommendation for this tiny jazz spot that I never would’ve found otherwise. The front desk folks are the kind of people who remember your name after one conversation, which honestly made me feel more at home than some of those sterile luxury hotels downtown. Sure, you won’t get a concierge in a fancy uniform, but you’ll get better local advice than most places twice the price. The only minor thing is that the elevator can be a bit slow during busy times, but given how walkable everything is from here, you’ll probably be out exploring most of the time anyway.

New York’s hotels showcase the perfect blend of cosmopolitan sophistication and American hospitality, with many featuring rooftop bars and authentic New York cultural experiences.

Reviews of Soul Food ‘Mont Morris’

  • Mesmerising stay in south Harlem – Teapack from Czech Republic – September 8, 2025 (10/10)

We loved the atmosphere of the place already from the entryway, which was decorated with huge Caladium plants. As soon as we stepped inside the house we were welcomed by a vibrant hallway with character. The stairs, floors, chandeliers, everything was screaming "THE New York experience"
After making our way up the stairs we entered our room that felt like something out of a movie. We feel like whenever we try to describe the room, it never does it justice, but let us tell you this: We loved exploring the house as much as exploring NY.
The whole guesthouse is filled with the host’s art, which is a personal touch we adored.
Since we were so in awe of the place, we’ve decided to meet our host. She was as welcoming as the house and has given us tips on where to go, what to see and how to enjoy NY as if we were locals.

The place is in 5 min walking distance to metro station, Central Park and whole array of restaurants. Getting home late at night was also not an issue.

We’d recommend this guesthouse to anyone who prefers an experience full of character over sterile hotel rooms.

  • Cultural, Inviting, Easy and Exceptional – Monica from United States – September 1, 2025 (10/10)

Where do I start?! The room was Beautifully decorated, very artsy and much attention to detail. We appreciated all the toiletries and when we notified our host of anything we needed they responded QUICKLY and very kindly. The location was perfect to navigate the subway, grocery stores, restaurants and we felt very safe in the neighborhood. I don’t know what could’ve made our trip better. Thank you!!

  • Exceptional – Ekaterina from Belgium – August 8, 2025 (10/10)

Absolutely beautiful guesthouse with fantastic interior, located in a cozy and quiet street, still with easy access to the trains. Our room was beautiful, super clean, with a spacious bathroom. Hosts are friendly and helpful. Truly a unique place, we enjoyed our stay a lot. And hot chocolate in the room was amazing

  • It was fantastic, would stay here again! – J from United States – July 28, 2025 (10/10)

The room was very well decorated and clean, there was a nespresso machine and a brita in the fridge. There was also a paper on the door with a map and recommended some places to go, which was very sweet

What could be improved: The water pressure in the shower wasn’t great

  • Great deal, amazing house – Andreagatto from Italy – June 10, 2025 (10/10)

The guest house is cozy, comfy and stylish. In the house you can notice much culture and is beautifully decorated. It is located in a nice part of Harlem where it’s easy to walk around and enjoy local amenities. Central Park is also near. The host is polite and responsive. Truly worth the price. I appreciated the cold water, tea, coffee and chocolate selection.

What could be improved: Really tiny things like WhatsApp response, checkin and other minor things may make the stay even better.

  • Spacious clean room – Finn from Sweden – June 4, 2025 (10/10)

    Spacious and clean. Helpful host.

What could be improved: A bit off central stuff in NYC, however it was easy for go downtown with metro Express line 2 and 3.

  • Exceptional – Fábio from Poland – May 14, 2025 (10/10)

The pretiest place we’ve been in New York. We were received by Karen who was super friendly and gave us tips for our trip. The internet was good and everything was really clean and well maintained.

What could be improved: There are some areas in harlen that don’t look so safe, but from the metro to the property is a 5 minutes walk through a main avenue and then the nice neighborhood – we didn’t have any problems.

  • Very good experience. Will book again. – Claude from United States – April 21, 2025 (8/10)

clean, warm & quiet; great location. Friendly hostess.

What could be improved: hole in tub porcelain

  • Quiet, comfortable, characterful, fun place to stay in fine street – Sian from United Kingdom – April 7, 2025 (10/10)

Fantastic house with wooden interior, art and plants adding character to every corner. Genial host. A place of real character.

What could be improved: Liked it altogether – a waste bin in the bedroom (for used teabags, etc.) might have been helpful – but all was good
