Overview

I’ll be honest – when I first heard about TownePlace Suites by Marriott New York Manhattan/Times Square, I wasn’t expecting much from a three-star extended-stay place smack in the middle of the Theater District chaos. But you know what? This place actually gets it right in ways that surprised me.

The location on West 44th Street puts you right in Hell’s Kitchen, which means you’re close enough to Times Square that you can walk there in about three minutes, but far enough that you’re not dealing with the Elmo costume crowd right outside your window. I mean, you’ll still hear some street noise – this is New York after all – but it’s manageable, especially on the higher floors. What I really appreciated was how close you are to some genuinely good food that isn’t tourist trap garbage. There’s this little Thai place called Larb Ubol just around the corner that locals actually eat at, and you’re walking distance to the whole Ninth Avenue food scene without having to trek across town.

The suites themselves are honestly pretty clever for the space constraints. They’ve got these full kitchens that aren’t just mini-fridges with delusions of grandeur – I’m talking actual stovetops, full-size fridges, and enough counter space to actually prep meals if you want to save some money (because let’s face it, eating out for every meal in Manhattan gets expensive fast). The beds are comfortable enough, though the pillows lean a bit soft for my taste. What struck me most was how they’ve managed to create distinct living areas even in what’s basically a studio layout. The pull-out couch actually works for guests, which – trust me – is rarer than it should be in New York hotels.

Check-in was smoother than expected, even during the pre-theater rush when Hell’s Kitchen gets absolutely packed. The front desk staff seemed to know their stuff about the neighborhood too, which is always a good sign. Parking is going to cost you extra (this is Manhattan, so no surprises there), but there’s a garage situation they can sort out if you really need to bring a car into the city. Honestly though, you’re better off using the subway – the A, C, E trains at 42nd Street Port Authority are about a five-minute walk, and you’ve got the N, Q, R, W, S at Times Square just as close.

The whole place has this extended-stay vibe that works whether you’re staying three days or three weeks. I’ve seen business travelers who were clearly settling in for longer stretches, but it doesn’t feel like a corporate housing situation. There’s something refreshing about having space to actually unpack and live a little, rather than camping out of a suitcase in a tiny room. During busy Broadway seasons, you’ll want to book well ahead because the location really is prime for theater people, but even in slower months, the rates stay reasonable for what you get in this part of town.
